In the streets they stand, blocking traffic and buses, holding candles whose flames shiver in the wind, carrying red and blue signs proudly overhead. They are red-eyed and bleary, wounded, weary. They are brave, patriots in the truest sense of the word. They are Americans, and they will fight to keep their voices from being silenced. Through the streets of San Francisco and Los Angeles they march, side by side, refusing to accept the blatant bigotry and hateful homophobia they've just been slapped across the face with.
Today we need to march. Not against the enemy, but for ourselves so that the world can see us not through their judgmental and ignorant eyes, but unfiltered, honest and unabashedly human. Today we need to boycott, to stand up in the courts, and to rally together behind one cause: equality for all. Because all men are created equal, all men are created in God's image, and all of us deserve compassion, respect, and the right to marry the person we love.
And we cannot accomplish this alone. There are churches in this country who recognize the rights of gays and lesbians, and believe that injustice was done on November 4th in the state of California. There are other minority groups who have been discriminated against whom we need to reach out to, educate, and ally ourselves with. There are men and women all across this country who are right on the edge and just need a firm push across the line. One day, Justice will come, and although there will still be those who spit vile words instead of exercising compassion and kindness, they will no longer have the upper hand.
We have always moved slowly as a nation, many times too slowly to be proud of, but in the end Justice and the Right have won out. If we can overcome slavery, Jim Crow laws, give women the right to vote, and elect an African American man to president, then we can do this too. We shall overcome, all men are created equal, I have a dream, and yes we can.
Yes we can.
